Kemp Vows to ‘Keep Fighting’ Inflation in Georgia

The governor of Georgia Wednesday said he will continue battling to keep costs down for Georgians after the June Consumer Price Index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was released.

That report showed 9.1 percent inflation, by far the highest one-month increase in more than 40 years.

“In yet another sign the decisions coming out of Washington are failing hardworking Georgians, Bidenflation has reached a new height!” Gov. Brian Kemp said on Twitter Wednesday. “While the [President] & Dems continue to double down on bad policies, I’ll keep fighting to ease the burden on the Peach State.”

Kemp is running for reelection against Stacey Abrams, whom he defeated in 2018’s gubernatorial race.

Tate Mitchell, a spokesman for the governor’s re-election campaign, spoke to The Georgia Star News Thursday, detailing the governor’s plans to fight inflation.

“Governor Kemp has taken action to fight Bidenflation by refunding over $1 billion in surplus funds to Georgia taxpayers, signing the largest state income tax cut in Georgia history, suspending the gas tax to reduce pain at the pump, enacting a State of Emergency for supply chain disruptions, and suspending the locomotive fuel tax to fight rising transportation costs that are passed on to consumers,” he said.

Mitchell also said Kemp intends to keep in place the gas tax suspension indefinitely.

“Governor Kemp will continue to reevaluate the gas tax suspension month by month in conjunction with state revenues and the leadership in the General Assembly.”

Tuesday, Abrams said she understood that Georgians were struggling financially, but offered only platitudes. She had not addressed the Wednesday inflation report at press time.

“I know Georgians are struggling right now. Folks are in financial pain and emotional pain. Families across our state are anxious, and they are afraid,” she said. “We need a governor who can acknowledge the pain and offer the promise of a better future. I will be that governor.”
